Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition

Years of research condensed into 180 seconds.

Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) was founded at The University of Queensland in Australia in 2008 and has since grown to an international event. More than 600 institutions in more than 60 countries now hold competitions. UNT has held its 3MT competition annually since 2015.

The 3MT is a professional development opportunity whereby UNT’s graduate students develop skills in presenting their research and its greater impacts in a concise and cogent manner – skills that serve them well throughout their future endeavors.

As Joseph Oppong, Associate Vice Provost of the Toulouse Graduate School explains, “Three Minute Thesis is not dumbing down the research but forces students to synthesize their discoveries and present them with credibility.”

In addition to the great learning experience, and, of course, the glory, students also receive cash prizes. The winner of the UNT competition then advances to compete regionally, at the Council of Southern Graduate Schools conference, where last year’s UNT winner, Kaley Cave, was a finalist with “Shiner’s Last Stand.”

      • Contestants may revise presentations until December 1
    • November 18 Rehearsal
    • December 2 3MT® Final Competition
    • March 13-15, 2024 Winner advances to the CSGS 3MT in Greenville, South Carolina
